Confirmation of Betsy DeVos as USA secretary of education means the end of public schools as we know them, her critics have charged.
"Shame! Shame!" one of the protesters yelled as DeVos and an aide tried to enter Jefferson Middle School Academy - and then backtracked back to her black Chevy SUV.
DeVos remained inside her sport utility vehicle for a few minutes, dodging the most aggressive demonstrators, but eventually found another way into the building.
According to several sources, teachers at the school were upset by her visit and planned to wear black to show their feelings.
DeVos' opponents said they plan to continue protesting her appointment at every opportunity.
Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, one of the groups that vigorously opposed DeVos' nomination, condemned the incident.
