Betsy DeVos blocked by protesters from entering DC public school: 'Shame! Shame!'

Police said they arrested one man for assaulting a police officer.

Confirmation of Betsy DeVos as USA secretary of education means the end of public schools as we know them, her critics have charged.

"Shame! Shame!" one of the protesters yelled as DeVos and an aide tried to enter Jefferson Middle School Academy - and then backtracked back to her black Chevy SUV.

DeVos remained inside her sport utility vehicle for a few minutes, dodging the most aggressive demonstrators, but eventually found another way into the building.

According to several sources, teachers at the school were upset by her visit and planned to wear black to show their feelings.

DeVos' opponents said they plan to continue protesting her appointment at every opportunity.

Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, one of the groups that vigorously opposed DeVos' nomination, condemned the incident.

Most charter school advocates are happy with her confirmation but Raymond J. Ankrum of the Riverhead Charter School remains cautious. "This is a bear". She also showed she doesn't understand current federal laws to support and protect students with disabilities.

"This nomination is an insult to school children and their families, to teachers and principals, and to communities fighting to improve their public schools", Bennet said in a statement. "We need to keep it that way".

WJLA reported the Washington Teachers' Union organized a protest but that union members were not among the people blocking her entry. If you have an affluent school district that's majority white, and you have students coming in from poor school districts that are minority students.

"We want to share the message that we love our public school system, " union president Elizabeth Davis told reporters outside Jefferson.
