Retired General Keith Kellogg, who has been the White House National Security Council chief of staff, was named acting national security adviser.

Kellogg, 72, was born in OH and served 36 years in the military: in the army in Vietnam, as a special forces officer in Cambodia, and during the first Iraq war as chief of staff for the 82nd Airborne Division.

Sources say he is now tipped to be the most likely contender for the prominent role of National Security Adviser, in the now-vacant position, CNN reports.

Other possible picks: Former CIA Director David Petraeus, retired Vice Admiral Robert Harward and former National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley.

Harward formerly served as the deputy commander of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).

Harward spent nearly 40 years in the Navy and was on President George W. Bush's National Security Council with experience in several Middle Eastern countries as well as Somalia and Bosnia. Harward is reportedly the favorite to succeed Flynn.
