He will make $14 million in the coming season, and Fox Sports reported that Cincinnati will pick up most of his salary.

Phillips does have a no-trade clause and blocked a deal to Atlanta back in January.

Chase Utley just re-signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers to be a bench bat for $2 million this year. It has no realistic chance of catching the Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals or Pittsburgh Pirates in the immediate future. He appeared to be penciled in as the team's everyday second baseman thus the quick acquisition of Phillips.

Phillips, 35, has played 15 years in the majors, the past 11 with Cincinnati. At 28 years old, Portuondo made it to AAA as a reliever. Injured left hand near end of last season.

A decision has yet to be made on the travel ban, but the battle is likely to escalate all the way to the Supreme Court. Kelly spoke about border security and President Trump's recent travel ban.

Rosenthal said the Reds were looking to "increase the playing time of Jose Peraza, perhaps at the expense of longtime second baseman [Phillips]" before the deal. He spent part of a year ago in the International League. But the shoulder injury will instead cause him to miss most of the 2017 season. He stole 21 bases, drove in 25 runs, scored 25 and hit three home runs. Angel Pagan is still a free agent, as is the indefatigable Juan Uribe - the latter while sitting on 199 career home runs. He reached the 30-30 plateau in the two statistics in a breakout 2007 campaign and was a force in the middle of the Reds lineup for three postseason squads.

It wasn't immediately known whom the Reds will receive in the trade.

In the Braves' case, the addition of Phillips is another instance of what president of baseball operations John Hart has been doing all offseason: adding veteran experience at a low price. The team acquired veterans Bartolo Colon, Jaime Garcia and R.A. Dickey earlier in the offseason.
