"We hope he's OK and back with us as soon as possible".

Atletico say the former Liverpool and Chelsea man will remain in hospital so that he can be monitored.

Atletico Madrid's 1-1 draw with Deportivo La Coruna has been overshadowed by a late incident that saw Fernando Torres stretchered off the field due to a head injury.

Immediately the players surrounding him knew it was serious as some - Bergantinos included - waved over to the bench for medical attention, while others appeared to be attempting to stop him from swallowing his tongue.

There was huge concern from both sets of players and Torres was carried off on a stretcher before being taken to hospital in an ambulance.

Atletico Madrid have confirmed he is "conscious and stabilised" but will spend the night under observation before having more tests tomorrow.

The injury came in the final minutes of the match as Torres went up for a header.

"Everybody was speechless in the dressing room because of what happened", said forward Antoine Griezmann, who scored Atletico's equalizer.

Atletico struggled to get their game going, as Griezmann and Kevin Gameiro cut frustrated figures in the attack.

"It wasn't a good movement", Atletico coach Diego Simeone said.

Everton talisman Romelu Lukaku also wrote: "A speedy recovery to my former teammate", with a prayer emoji. He has won both the Champions League (biggest club tournament) and the World Cup throughout his illustrious career.
