A 43-year-old man is wanted in St. Catharines for first degree murder in connection with the death of his 7- year-old stepson.

The child, who police identify as seven-year-old Nathan Dumas, was taken to hospital in critical condition and died early Saturday morning. Niagara police are on the hunt for Kuijer, a 43-year-old Ontario man wanted in connection to a stabbing at a bank and linked to the investigation of his stepson's death.

Police spokesman Const. Phil Gavin said police will not discuss how the circumstances that brought the boy to hospital and the stabbing at the bank are connected.

Friends of the boy's family started a GoFundMe campaign that had netted almost $12,000 by Monday morning, eclipsing the original target of $10,000. "This has impacted the entire community", Gavin said during a press briefing at the NRP's St. Catharines office.

Gavin said the incidents have had a "significant" impact on members of the community.

"It's pivotal to us that we lay the most appropriate charges", he said.

They add that the victim and Kuijer knew each other professionally and the incident isn't being investigated as a robbery or a domestic violence matter. He was rushed to hospital where he died the next day.

“He had two different eye colours, so I had to explain to Nathan why that was. "It's not easy, but we have a job to do, and we try to persevere through that". In a Facebook post Saturday, Dumas said funeral arrangements for her son are being covered Victims Services Niagara.
