Cuonzo Martin steps down at Cal, apparently headed to Mizzou

Missouri announced hiring of Martin as its next coach Wednesday, hours after he resigned from his position at California.

Martin is now the coach at California. The Bears lost at home to Cal State Bakersfield in the NIT on Tuesday.

Three years ago, Cal looked at Xavier's Chris Mack and Richmond's Chris Mooney before Martin accepted the job. After two seasons with winning conference records, Martin led the Volunteers all the way to the sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament in 2014, before falling 73-71 to #2 MI.

Martin, 45, is now considering an offer from Missouri to replace Kim Anderson as the Tiger's head coach.

He was the head coach at Missouri State University for the three years before that, starting in 2008.

Cuonzo Martin is leaving California for Missouri, according to sources.

Martin has been viewed as a candidate for the vacancies at IL and Missouri. Prior to heading to Berkeley, Martin coached Mizzou's SEC rival, the Tennessee Volunteers.

His teams have finished with a winning record every season but his first at Missouri State, and his record has been remarkably consistent at each stop. Martin was 62-39 overall, 29-25 in conference. The offer was first reported by ESPN on Wednesday morning and subsequent details have emerged from various outlets throughout the day.

Former Mizzou coach Kim Anderson stepped down earlier this month.

Sophomore big man Ivan Rabb is expected to declare for the NBA Draft. Martin's deal is believed to be a seven year deal, worth $21 million.

While Martin averages 20 wins or more every year, compared to Mizzou's average of only 9.3 wins over the past three years, some question how high the ceiling is with Martin.

He has a career record of 186-121 as a head coach in Division 1 college basketball.
