Giants expected to add ex-Jets QB Geno Smith

It makes sense for the Jets and Smith to go their separate ways.

With the Giants, Smith will rejoin former Jets teammates Brandon Marshall and Damon Harrison. The 26-year-old quarterback is still recovering from tearing his ACL in Week 7 of last season, but Geno could theoretically be in line as Manning's eventual replacement when his contract runs out after 2018. Smith was fined by the National Football League for cursing at a fan at a home game and he received a torrent of criticism for missing a team meeting on a West Coast trip, claiming he got the time zones mixed up.

Smith is a free agent after a tumultuous four-year stint with Gang Green, which included the infamous punch to the face by IK Enemkpali in 2015 that cost him the starting job.

Geno appeared in 33 games for the Jets making 30 starts.

The team also re-signed veteran Josh Johnson on Friday, per his agent, Doug Hendrickson. That's something the Giants didn't have behind Manning over the past couple seasons with Ryan Nassib acting as Eli's primary backup.

Johnson, who has spent time with nine different teams over nine seasons, was on the Giants a year ago as their third quarterback. The 2017 NFL Draft has several quarterbacks who might not be high-round draft picks, but still have traits that could merit consideration on the third day. He underwent surgery last November, vowing to be ready for training camp.
