Happiness isn't just about money, although it's part of it. John Helliwell, one of the authors of the report said.

Employment, income inequality, national gross domestic product, lack of corruption in government, and business and social support are among other factors in the countries' scores.

"I want governments to measure this, discuss it, analyse it and understand when they have been off on the wrong direction", he said. Jeffrey Sachs, the director of Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) which published the World Happiness Report said. Experts say the research showcases how government leaders can change policies to improve their citizens' happiness.

Also in the top five happiest countries are Iceland, Switzerland, and Finland. "For many years, Norway has been behind Denmark in this ranking".

Countries that achieved positive results have "high levels of mutual trust, shared objective, generosity and good governance", said Helliwell, a professor at the University of British Columbia. France, however, didn't even manage to break into the top 30, which makes it one of the saddest Western European countries (31st).

The report also mentions declining happiness levels in the U.S., while Russian Federation has jumped up the subjective ladder from number 56 to 49 in the space of a year. Unsurprisingly, satisfaction differs across various sectors and job types.
