÷ is on track to achieve one of the biggest first-week totals of recent years.

It means Sheeran will have scored the largest opening week sales since Adele's third album 25 shifted 800,307 copies in November 2015.

It's not so much a case of whether Ed Sheeran's Divide (Asylum) can take the United Kingdom chart crown.

Of the 432,000 sales, 63% were on CD and vinyl, 31% were downloads and 6% were "streaming equivalent sales" - an estimate of how streaming figures equate to sales.

"I think it's an improvement on the last two records". That's a big feat because her last album sold 20 million. "But if I don't set her as the benchmark then I'm selling myself short.I'm not in competition [creatively] because we all sit in our own lanes, but once the creative product is out there is a race to the finish line".

If that wasn't enough, Sheeran's songs are dominating the top 10 midweek chart.

Ed is also dominating the Official Singles Chart this week, with all 16 tracks from ÷ on course to enter the Top 40, nine of which are inside the Top 10, led by Shape Of You (1), Castle On The Hill (2), Galway Girl (3) and flawless (4).
