Tillerson's email alias was prompted by business needs, Exxon says

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, the former chairman and chief executive of Exxon Mobil Corp, used an alias email address while at the oil company to send and receive information related to climate change and other matters, according to New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.

The e-mails that were provided allowed the attorney general to figure out that Tillerson used the account between 2008 and 2015 at least, but it didn't appear on Exxon's list of accounts for which records were preserved.

According to the news site, Tillerson, or should I say Tracker, Wayne Tracker, now has significant pull over matters related to climate change as the USA secretary of state.

The state attorney general's office discovered "Wayne Tracker" during an investigation of Exxon Mobil to determine whether the company had misled shareholders and the public about the possible financial risks that climate change poses to its business. The letter also mentions 34 other e-mail accounts "specifically assigned to top executives, board members, or assistants" that the attorney general thinks should have been included. The filing comes in a protracted legal dispute in which Exxon seeks to derail probes by NY and MA into whether the company misled investors for years about the possible impact of climate change on its business. "The email address, Wayne.Tracker@exxonmobil.com, is part of the company's email system and was put in place for secure and expedited communications between select senior company officials and the former chairman for a broad range of business-related topics". Some have used secondary email accounts while others sought to mask their communications. His "Red Rufus" email account, a reference to his call sign as a Marine pilot, is still his primary email address, Lutz said Tuesday in an email. Tillerson's middle name is Wayne. The original accusation was levied in a letter to a judge overseeing an investigation launched by the NY attorney general.

"If they had nothing to hide, then why the secret email account?" said Jamie Henn, a spokesman for the environmental group 350.org, which has supported the state probes into Exxon.

The underlying case, People of the State of New York v. PricewaterhouseCoopers and Exxon Mobil Corporation, was filed in New York State Supreme Court, New York County.
