5 things to know about April the giraffe and her calf

While the world was watching and waiting for April the giraffe to give birth at a zoo in NY, a baby giraffe made her public debut at the Houston Zoo on Friday.

April, a 15-year-old giraffe kept in a USA zoo, gave birth to a calf on a live feed to an internet audience of over a million people yesterday. About 45 minutes after it was born, the calf stood on its wobbly legs while mom helped keep her baby steady.

He began nursing not long after. He's yet to be named, although April's home park, Animal Adventure, is reportedly putting together a GoFundMe account where people can vote for $1 a pop. Her labor has been extensive, and the nation has been keeping up with her through Animal Adventure Park's live feed, as the zoo was closed during the winter season.

The calf is April's fourth, but the first born at the park. This is his first offspring. The zoo began streaming from April's enclosure in February. The calf will stay with April and its father for six to 12 months, and then be moved to another facility for safety reasons.

Though some fans got frustrated when April's due date of mid-January to mid-February came and went, many others continued to tune in. People around the world have been tuning in daily.

$19.8 billion airwaves auction may mean better cell service
The goal of the auction - years in the making, and playing out for more than 12 months - was to free up spectrum for wireless use. And US Cellular picked up 188 licenses for $328 million, though they're likely to be located in rural areas, thus the lower cost.

Giraffes have one of the longest gestation periods of any animal, about 15 months.

April has her own website and even an apparel line. The money will be used for the care of the animals.

Since February, the live feed provided by AAP attracted millions across the USA and in many parts of the world.

A contest will be held to decide on a name for the calf. Patch blamed "a handful of extremists and animal rights activists" for the interruption. Newborn giraffes generally weigh about 150 pounds (68.04 kilograms) and are about 6 feet (1.83 meters) tall at birth. According to KYMX News, when Mazuri's contract expired, Animal Adventure Park was scrambling to find a new sponsor.
