Cristiano Ronaldo happy to hit 100-goal milestone, says Zinedine Zidane

MUNICH-Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice for Real Madrid to beat Bayern Munich 2-1 in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal on Wednesday, ending the German side's tournament record of 16 straight wins at home.

The four-time Ballon d'Or victor ended his first European goals since September with the 47th-minute equaliser before putting Madrid in the box seat 13 minutes from time.

Vidal could have finished with a first-half hat-trick when he stepped up to take a penalty after Dani Carvajal's handball from a Franck Ribery shot.

Real still have to fend off a likely Bayern fightback on Tuesday, but they remain on course to become the first team to retain the Champions League.

"We're happy with the game we played".

"It is not easy to play here, Bayern have great players and are a great team, but we still needed to play well in the second half".

Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer denied Ronaldo a hat trick with some excellent saves when Madrid were on top against 10 men, and earned some praise from Los Blancos' No. 7.

But since then he has been scoreless in six matches, including a 2-1 win at Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday when Cristiano Ronaldo netted both of Madrid's goals.

Cristiano Ronaldo reaches milestone but says Champions League tie remains open
Bayern should have been 2-0 up at the break, but Arturo Vidal, who headed the hosts into a first-half lead, skied a penalty. The last time Madrid failed to score was in April, in a 0-0 draw at Manchester City in the Champions League semifinals.

"You never decide a tie like this in the first-leg, but we created our chances and we could have scored more goals", said Zidane.

It proved a costly miss as Ronaldo swept in an equaliser two minutes into the second half before Bayern's defensive midfielder Javi Martinez picked up two quick cautions to leave the home side a player down for the final half-hour.

"We have a small advantage but we have to be calm for the second leg". We showed patience and we showed the willingness to get the right result.

Real made a poor start, rarely threatening Germany's goalkeeper Neuer, back after minor foot surgery a fortnight ago.

Leicester had no attempts on target for the entire game but they did have a penalty shout turned down in the second half when Riyad Mahrez appeared to have been brought down in the box.

"Gareth felt something at half-time and I didn't want to take any risks, he didn't feel very well, we hope it's nothing major, nothing big", said Zidane.

That makes 100 goals in 143 games, a sensational record that books him another place in the record books - although it may not last long as rival Lionel Messi is just three goals behind him (97 goals in just 118 games).
