Secretary-General Antonio Guterres designated Malala Yousafzai, global advocate for girls education and the youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize laureate, as a United Nations Messenger of Peace with a special focus on girls education, at a special ceremony today at the UN Headquarters in NY.

Guterres also cited Yousafzai's "courageous defense" of the rights of all people, including women and girls, to education and equality, and honored her for showing "an unwavering dedication to peace" even in the face of great danger, and her desire to foster a better world.

Last month, Ms Yousafzai said she had received an offer to study politics, philosophy and economics at a United Kingdom university, on condition of achieving three As in her A-levels.

For opposing Taliban restrictions on the education of girls and after being shot for the same on October 9,2012, Malala became an global symbol for the girls right to education around the world.

Malala came to prominence when a Taliban attacker shot her in the head in 2012 as she was leaving school in Swat. Yousafzai survived the attack and continues fight for human rights, in particular for female education.

Yousafzai became the youngest-ever Nobel laureate in 2014 when she was recognised for her advocacy of the right of all children to education.
