New Space Science and Supplies Arrive at Station Saturday Morning

In memory of the late astronaut, a supply ship bearing his name arrived at the International Space Station (ISS) on Saturday.

The unmanned commercial spacecraft, on its seventh contracted resupply mission for NASA, was grappled by a robotic arm operated by astronauts inside the space station at 6:05 a.m. EDT (1005 GMT), the USA space agency said.

The spacecraft launched from Cape Canaveral air force station in Florida on Tuesday.

Orbital ATK, a commercial cargo provider for NASA, said it is prepared to launch two additional cargo missions this year. "The more than three tons of pressurized cargo in the Cygnus spacecraft will be put to good use to continue our mission of research, exploration and discovery".

Once aboard the orbiting outpost, Fischer and Yurchikhin will join the Expedition 51 crew.

After the astronauts unpack the Cygnus, they will reload it with trash that will burn up along with the spacecraft upon re-entry into Earth's atmosphere on July 25.

On April 24, the US President will congratulate Peggy Whitson for her outstanding career as an astronaut.

Space station commander Peggy Whitson — who on Monday will set a US record for most accumulated time in orbit — notified Mission Control when the capsule was captured.

On May 12, Whitson and Fischer will venture outside for a spacewalk to replace an external computer, install a high-definition camera on the station's power truss, attach micrometeoroid shielding to a docking port and help engineers troubleshoot cooling issues with a high-energy physics experiment.

She also holds the record for most spacewalks by a female astronaut. Whitson took her eighth spacewalk in March.

Novitskiy and Pesquet plan to return to Earth June 2 to close out a 196-day mission.

Whitson and Pesquet have been living on the space station since November, along with a Russian. Her first stint as commander was in April 2008 and she's commanding the current crew.
