Rep. Jason Chaffetz will not run for reelection in 2018

A small group gathered outside the building that houses his office in Provo to dance in celebration.

I am grateful for all of you in the current and previous 3rd Congressional District.

Unlike Chaffetz, small donors provided most of the Allen's money for the 2018 race. His decision to make the Wednesday announcement, he says, was to give prospective candidates in Utah "time to lay the groundwork for a successful run".

The popular Congressman was involved in Utah politics for many years before winning the state's House seat.

Rep. Elijah Cummings, a Baltimore Democrat and that committee's ranking member, called his counterpart a "tenacious and dedicated public servant" in a statement issued Wednesday. Chaffetz now serves as the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman, where his actions affect the whole country. Orrin Hatch decides to retire?

He first entered the political arena in 2003, serving as former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, Jr.'s campaign manager and chief of staff for two years, and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2008, where he's remained ever since.

"For those that would speculate otherwise, let me be clear that I have no ulterior motives", he wrote.

The Oversight Committee chairman announced Wednesday he would not be seeking reelection to the House in 2018. "Clearly, Chaffetz crumbled under the weight of the widespread backlash that he's been facing for refusing to do his job, which is a victory for all Americans and will serve as a motivating force for the grassroots".

The High Electoral Board (YSK) confirmed late on Sunday the results had shown the "Yes" campaign with 1.25 million more votes than the "No" camp.

Chaffetz said he will return to work in the private sector despite saying he is "confident I would continue to be re-elected by large margins".

In the four presidential elections between 2000 and 2012, Republican candidates won the district by more than 65 percent of the vote.

Despite Chaffetz' confidence, he has been plagued by recent gaffes-such as his comment that people who can't afford health insurance should stop buying iPhones-and accusations that he runs his oversight committee in a hyper-partisan way.

"I think we'll have a vigorous process by which a replacement will be chosen and we believe that that seat will remain Republican", he said.

"I feel like, as progressives here in Utah, we have very few victories", Kelly said. It's one of the most Republican districts in the nation.

Former Utah GOP Chairman Thomas Wright's name has also been floated.

"There's no question getting out of Congress, shedding the Trump baggage and coming back here and shoring up support for what could be a hard 2020 primary is really the best option", Gehrke concluded.

"He has served with distinction during his four terms in the House of Representatives, and has become a good friend and colleague". Regardless, Chaffetz likely (correctly) assumes that America will be in ruins by 2028, giving him the ideal opportunity to swoop in, save the country, and finally get the recognition he so very much deserves. The Democrat had already raked in about $500,000 as of last month.
