VW sees ID electric crossover as key to boosting EV sales

Considering the current technologies included in most vehicles these days, the label really isn't that far-fetched.

German automaker Volkswagen AG (VLKAY) displayed a mockup of a battery-electric crossover at "Auto Shanghai 2017", the production version of which is set to debut in 2020. Herbert Diess, Chairman of the Board of Management, Volkswagen Brand: "By 2025, we want to boost annual sales of electric vehicles to one million units". Volkswagen mulling over the I.D. Crozz production is viable given the growing popularity of SUVs these days. Production tentatively is to begin in 2020. "The owner of the I.D. Crozz is then notified via an app or e-mail as soon as the parcel has been delivered". BUZZ (Detroit, 2017), the I.D.

Like the other ID concepts, the Crozz is based on Volkswagen's new Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB), which allows the axle and drive system modules to be spread out, giving it a long wheelbase.

A key part of its autonomous driving package, and a common trait with both earlier I.D. concepts, is the way the vehicle communicates which mode it's in.

The I.D. CROZZ is powered by a capable battery with an output of 225 kW, good for a top speed of 180 km/h and a driving range of 500 kilometers (NEDC). As with the earlier I.D. hatchback and I.D. Buzz, the new CUV features a steering wheel that automatically retracts into the dashboard fascia when the driver chooses autonomous mode. CROZZ drives with autopilot. It's not a guarantee that the concept vehicle will ever be produced. "We are making electric mobility the new trademark of Volkswagen".

An augmented-reality head-up display projects information such as navigation directions between seven to 15 metres ahead of the auto. Gesture control is gaining in importance. Compared to the Tiguan for example, the architecture of the I.D.

It features VW's C-Shaped light design signature on the front and a wraparound LED fitted into a black glass rear end on the back. When the vehicle is parked and shut down, the interior light circles in the headlights are replaced thin LED strips that make the "eyes" appear to be closed.

Law enforcement officials on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation in Montana began training this week on accessing the federal data. The broader mission is focused on strengthening relationships with reservations across the country.

Electric drive is redefining space. The I.D. Crozz will play a key role in that. CROZZ concept is similar to many crossovers of today in terms of its versatile seating and cargo capabilities.

The 83-kWh lithium-ion batteries are stored beneath the length of the cabin's floor, which provides a balanced 48/52 percent front/rear weight distribution. The seat configuration offers great flexibility.

That will mean having plenty of "Open Space", VW said. The rear? It has premium class dimensions. An 18-cubic-foot cargo hold is accessed via a steeply angled rear hatch.

According to Volkswagen, the 18.2 cubic foot trunk acts as the post box for a new "delivery service" where "an agent is able to locate the auto by Global Positioning System and is granted temporary permission to open the trunk via an app".
