"We need to take this very seriously", Lindmeier said on Friday.

More than 11,000 people died in the West African countries of Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia in 2014 and 2015, after an Ebola epidemic swept through the region.

Since Ebola virus was first identified in 1976, sporadic outbreaks have been reported in Africa.

The virus is fatal in up to 90% of cases, and the World Health Organization recently developed an experimental vaccine for use in emergencies. Among the 5,837 people who received the vaccine, no Ebola cases were recorded 10 days or more after vaccination.

The vaccine was designed at Canada's National Microbiology Laboratory and initially was tested during the West African Ebola outbreak.

The United Nations at the time saluted the "immense work" DR Congo authorities had put in to contain the disease spread.

The World Health Organisation declared Ebola was no longer an emergency in March 2016.

Final results from the trial published in The Lancet released last December showed the experimental vaccine offered protection against the virus and would help to bolster an early response to future outbreaks. The last Ebola outbreak in the DRC occurred in the Bas-Uele province - the site of the current episode - and killed 49 people over three months.

The WHO is now deploying health care workers to manage the outbreak and do surveillance to track it.

"WHO and partners are completing the epidemiological investigation to better understand the extent of the current outbreak and who are potentially at risk of Ebola", World Health Organization spokesperson Tarik Jasarevic told CIDRAP News.

Ebola is a fast-spreading virus and fatal in 90 percent of cases as there's no specific treatment.

The vaccine was tested in a trial involving almost 12,000 people in Guinea and Sierra Leone during 2015 and 2016.

"It's very important to find all the possible contacts of people who have been infected, who have been in contact with who, and see whether there is a possible continuation of infection and limit it as much as possible".
