At least one person was killed while 22 others were rescued after a foot bridge on Sanvordem river collapsed in south Goa's Curchorem town on Thursday evening, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said.

Onlookers crowded on the footbridge to watch the operation when the structure gave way, sending a large number of people crashing into the river.

District officials told reporters here that the body of Prakash Ekka, 28, from Jharkhand was taken out by divers early on Friday, taking the body count to two.

"We are trying to establish how many people are missing by interviewing witnesses", Prabhudessai said. The fire and emergency services have begun the search operation.
