New Google VR Headset coming from HTC and Lenovo

The company is cooperating with chipset vendor Qualcomm to build technology optimized for mobile VR, and has teamed up with HTC and Lenovo to bring standalone headsets to market later this year.

Google wanted to exceed consumer expectations with their new-gen headset by creating something that would provide users with a superior experience. They are free-form and wireless, yet still capable of providing full 360 degree tracking using what Google calls WorldSense.

As no external device, such as a smartphone or computer, is required to power the headsets, the website says that users won't have to worry about tripping over wires and "latency should be non-existent".

Google's annual developer conference, the Google I/O, witnesses the release of some of the biggest technological breakthroughs in technology. LG's next flagship phone, which will launch later this year, will also be Daydream compatible. The latter caught Google's liking and now in standalone Daydream VR headsets, these Qualcomm processors have been integrated with Google's tracking technology.

HTC and Lenovo are the first two major companies Google is teaming up with to develop completely standalone virtual reality headsets on the Daydream platform.

Google also announced that Expeditions VR, the platform that lets students take virtual "field trips", will roll out to some schools through a Pioneer program this fall. This is in addition to the Fall 2016 announcement of the Snapdragon 821 and 820 processors supporting Daydream ready devices.

Bavor did not elaborate on the new headset's technical specifications, but said that because it would be an all-in-one device.

Details are still light, with more to be announced "soon".

Tango is also one of the core technologies behind the company's new Visual Positioning Service (VPS), which helps devices understand their location indoors.
