Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau excited a lot of people when he joined LGBT activists and allies in Toronto Pride at the weekend.

Over the previous year, police involvement in Pride has become a contentious issue in Halifax, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and other Canadian cities.

Today's march in Toronto was also significant as it featured no official marching presence from uniformed police; an absence done at the request of organisers in response to concerns from Black Lives Matter.

Protestors affiliated with the Black Lives Matter movement delayed the parade for about an hour as they made themselves the de facto vanguard of the parade, stopped to protest at each intersection.

As Alpha News reported, Pride organizers originally attempted to limit police officer involvement in the parade. The PM, along with his wife and two kids, took the streets of Toronto to promote gender equality and diversity in all its forms through Pride parade.

"Inclusion is the core value in our community and as long as a group or a company supports LGBT equality, then in my opinion, welcome aboard", he said.
