Cosby's lawyer attacks 1 accuser as sex assault trial opens

Ms Constand first met Mr Cosby in late 2002 after being hired as the director of basketball operations for Temple University's women's basketball program.

Wednesday morning's cross-examination, centered primarily around phone calls Constand made in January of 2005, after she told her mother Cosby sexually assaulted her at his Cheltenham Township home in January of 2004.

"I was mistaken", she said, unflustered.

Some time later, according to Constand, she returned to Cosby's home to demand to know what was in the pills he gave her. "Mr. Cosby looked at me and said, 'I thought you had an orgasm, didn't you?' " Constand said.

Constand broke her long silence on Tuesday in court with a graphic account of the night she was allegedly drugged and sexually assaulted by Bill Cosby. Constand says the mood was friendly and the room light enough to eat.

Tuesday's testimony from Constand was also the first time she had spoken publicly about Cosby, due to the terms of a confidential 2006 settlement preventing her from doing so.

The claim came after Andrea Constand finished more than six hours of testimony, as defense lawyers sought to undermine her credibility by portraying her as an opportunist who pursued Cosby's affections before manufacturing a story in order to go after his fortune.

Constand's allegations unleashed a tidal wave of more than 60 women who claimed the man once dubbed America's Dad had drugged and sexually assaulted them as well.

Comedian Bill Cosby's trial for sexual assault opened with tearful testimony as prosecutors painted the star as a sexual predator: one who established trust with his alleged victims before incapacitating them with drugs and alcohol. "And I believed he supported numerous athletic programs".

Constand sued Cosby in 2005 after prosecutors initially decided not to charge him.

But there Constand was, on the stand, posture and presence near ideal.

"He said these will help you relax", she told jurors.

After that conversation, she said, she bought a recording device in hopes that Cosby would again confess to harming her daughter. Also, Cosby's admission to police that Constand consented to their sexual encounter could be troublesome for him given that Constand is gay.

Ms Constand has been barred from talking about her allegations for almost 12 years, following a successful civil case she brought against the comedian in 2006.

Constand said that, after she took the pills, Cosby led her to the couch and she lost consciousness.

But she admitted to staying in contact with Cosby after the alleged incident. "I was very afraid because I had a secret about the biggest celebrity in the world at that time".

On the pretext of her visit to Cosby's home that night: "He was a Temple friend, someone I trusted, a mentor". Johnson gave the deposition while pursuing a claim that she'd developed debilitating stress from her job as a secretary at the talent agency representing Cosby.
