Rep. Steve Scalise is a Roommate of Southern Illinois Congressman

The congressional baseball game will be played at Nationals Park Thursday night, just a day after Rep. Steve Scalise was shot and critically injured in Virginia.

The 51-year-old Republican congressman from Louisiana underwent another surgery on Saturday, the hospital treating him said, which was at least his third operation since being transported to the facility.

The announcement comes as the congressional charity baseball game, for which Scalise and his Republican colleagues had been practicing at the time of the shooting, continues as planned. Scalise was reported to have been tended to by Rep. Brad Wenstrup of OH, a US Army Reserve doctor who served in Iraq, before his treatment at the hospital.

President Donald Trump did not attend but in a video address shown on the stadium's giant screen praised the friendly nature of the annual charity event.

One of the Capitol Police officers, David Bailey, who was hailed as a hero for the way he helped to subdue the gunman, appeared on crutches.

Four others were also shot, and suspect James T. Hodgkinson was killed by police.

The FBI said it is also examining a number of social media postings purportedly made by Hodgkinson that criticized Trump.

"He's in some trouble", Trump said during a jobs event at the White House, calling Scalise a "great fighter" and "he's going to be OK, I hope".

"I think the security for members of Congress is embarrassingly inadequate".

May Sets Up Meeting With Irish "Kingmakers"
Sinn Féin spoke out this afternoon, warning Theresa May that a deal with the DUP would be in breach of the Good Friday agreement . Ms Foster also had short, separate discussion with new Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney.

Weapons used in Republican baseball shooting appear legally bought
A single shot left Scalise, 51, with a shattered bone in his left hip and internal injuries that caused severe bleeding. Investigators have not determined the goal of the list and they are still trying to determine its meaning.

Wife: Man who shot congressman wanted to work on tax policy
The FBI said the 66-year-old home inspector had been living out a van near the park since March. In 2012, he protested outside the local post office, carrying a sign reading "Tax the Rich".

WASHINGTON - Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise was upgraded from "critical" to "serious condition" Saturday and continued to show signs of improvement after he was wounded in a shooting at a Republican baseball practice outside Washington. "We will provide periodic updates". Thompson offered his appreciation for the bravery of the U.S. Capitol Police.

The lawmakers took the field with many wearing hats to honour Scalise.

And because the shooter's political views drove him to commit a insane and violent act, all Washington is on edge as Scalise fights for his life.

Scalise, the No. 3 House Republican, arrived at the hospital via helicopter in shock, with intense internal bleeding, Sava said.

Lucee Laursen of La Crosse, Wisconsin, interning in the capital for a nonprofit, said, "It's showing that we might have differences in political spheres but we come together for a good cause".

Trump added, "We pray for all of the victims of this awful crime who are still recovering, including Zachary Barth and Matt Mika, both of whom are respected and cherished by so many".

Two Capitol police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, as well as House Republican aide Zack Barth were injured, but have been released from hospital. When I talk to lawmakers who are on the teams, both the Democratic team and the Republican team yesterday, they talk about it as being one of the highlights of their year.

Speaking today from the White House, President Trump said Scalise's condition- initially announced as "stable" - was "much more hard that people even thought at the time". Democrats have won seven of the last eight games, bringing the overall series to an even 39-39-1 (the teams played multiple times in some years).
