Reports say Mueller probe now examining possible obstruction

Christopher Ruddy, CEO of Newsmax Media and friend of Donald Trump, floated the notion on Monday that the President might dismiss special counsel Mueller.

"I think he's considering perhaps terminating the special counsel", Ruddy told Woodruff on the broadcast. They will also ask about his decision to recuse from an investigation into possible ties between Moscow and associates of President Donald Trump.

Mueller was appointed by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

The meeting comes a day after lawmakers questioned Justice Department officials about the probe and Mueller's independence, and after a friend of Trump said the White House was considering firing Mueller. Allies of the president cast doubt on the idea that Trump would take such a step, and White House officials said Ruddy did not meet directly with the president while he was there.

It was Mr Rosenstein who appointed Mr Mueller to the job in the first place, since he took carriage of the Russia investigation from the Attorney-General Jeff Sessions, who was forced to recuse himself because of his own contacts with Russian officials in the lead-up to last year's United States election. If Trump were to make such a move, he would have to order Rosenstein to fire Mueller.

Former CIA agent and frequent CNN guest Phil Mudd thinks that President Trump should admit he was bluffing about the existence of possible tapes of his conversations with fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey. She asked whether he has seen "any evidence of good cause" to fire Mueller. ADVERTISEMENT "I think it's pretty straightforward", Mudd said Friday on CNN.

Three members of the legal team known to have been hired so far by Mueller have given political donations nearly exclusively to Democrats, according to a CNN analysis of Federal Election Commission records.

"There's some real conflicts", Ruddy said.

"If President fired Bob Mueller, Congress would immediately re-establish independent counsel and appoint Bob Mueller", Schiff said in a tweet.

Last month, Gingrich had tweeted: "Robert Mueller is superb choice to be special counsel".

The Washington Post, citing five people briefed on the requests who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Dan Coats, the director of national intelligence, Mike Rogers, the head of the National Security Agency, and Richard Ledgett, the former deputy director at the NSA, had agreed to be interviewed by Mueller's investigators as early as this week. "Don't waste our time".
