Roger Federer beats Alexander Zverev to win Gerry Weber Open in Halle

The 18-times grand-slam champion, who captured the Australian Open, Indian Wells and Miami titles this year, skipped the entire claycourt season to improve his chances of winning a record eighth title at the All England Club.

In the semi-final, he eased past his Russian opponent Karen Khachanov 6-4 7-6 (5), to reach his 11th final in Halle.

He lost in the opening round of the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart last week to Tommy Haas but has looked much more impressive in Halle which is ominous for his rivals ahead of Wimbledon, which starts on July 3.

The 20-year-old Zverev had no answer to Federer's inch-perfect execution and was broken three times in a lightning-fast first set.

The bare numbers hardly tell the tale: 6-1, 6-3 to Federer, 58 points to 33 overall, winning 79% of his service points, 52% when receiving.

Lopez, meanwhile, had to overcome a 45-minute delay during the second set, when he regained composure to see off Dimitrov, the player who had beaten him in the 2014 final at the west London venue.
