Scalise's Shooter Appears to Have Acted Alone, FBI Says

Representative Steve Scalise of Louisiana, the No. 3 Republican in the House, was gravely wounded after a rifle bullet tore through his hip. Inside, among his belongings, investigators found 200 rounds of ammunition and a receipt for a gun purchase in November 2016. At this point in the investigation, the FBI does not believe that these photographs represented surveillance of intended targets, though the release said the investigation into Hodgkinson's recent activities was ongoing.

Investigators say he armed himself with two weapons, a 7.62mm caliber SKS rifle and a 9mm handgun, both of which were determined to have been purchased legally.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Timothy Slater said at the press conference that Hodgkinson had a piece of paper with the names of six members of Congress. "He is now listed in fair condition and is beginning an extended period of healing and rehabilitation", the hospital said in a statement Wednesday.

Hodgkinson shot and critically wounded Rep. Steve Scalise as he and several other Republican members of Congress were practicing for a charity baseball game with their Democratic colleagues at a ballfield in Alexandria, Va., last Wednesday. He has undergone several surgeries and remains in hospital. Bernie Sanders and was "in communication" with offices of his IL senators.

Authorities said while they found no evidence that Hodgkinson searched for the baseball game or practices on the Internet, agents are still investigating.

U.S. Capitol Police and other officers returned fire and killed Hodgkinson, who was later identified as an unemployed home inspector who held a hostile attitude toward President Donald Trump and other Republicans.

Alongside a poster listing the various help points, Rita wrote: "Shocked and devastated to hear this awful news". The horrific fire in the Grenfell Tower in London reportedly affected hundreds of families.

On the day of the incident, Hodgkinson shot at the players on the field with the semiautomatic rifle and the 9mm handgun and had bought the weapons from licensed gun deals, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Records showed he visited the storage unit more than 43 times in two months, usually between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m.

Investigators say he took pictures and videos of various landmarks upon his arrival in April, that includes the ballpark where the attack took place.

The FBI confirmed that a witness reported that Hodgkinson has asked them on the morning of the shooting: "Is this the Republican or Democrat baseball team?" "When the witness responded that it was a Republican event, Hodgkinson reportedly remained at the baseball field".

But, according to Slater's statement, it does not appear Hodgkinson had been planning his attack. The night before the shooting, Hodgkinson visited locations with free WiFi to search on his computer directions from Alexandria to his home in Belleville and the "2017 Republican Convention".

"Without regard to their personal safety, they stepped up and did what was necessary to protect those around them", said U.S. Capitol Police Chief Matthew Verderosa.
