Seattle teachers to hold rally demanding justice for Charleena Lyles

A Seattle Police officer cradles a child, with two more in the vehicle, at the scene where police shot and killed a 30-year-old woman at the Brettler Family Place Apartments at Magnuson Park, Sunday June 18, 2017, in Seattle.

Seattle police officers fatally shot a 30-year-old pregnant woman Sunday in her home while three of her children were in the house.

"Why couldn't they have Tased her?". Toward the end, the officers could be heard yelling "get back" and "we need help" and then gunfire erupted.

But several minutes in, there's noise on the tape and officers can be heard telling someone to get back.

Her brother, Domico Jones, said that Lyles "was not a person you would fear or feel intimidated by" and that she was anxious the authorities wanted to take away her children, including a toddler with Down's Syndrome.

SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle police are investigating the fatal shooting by two officers of a woman family members say was pregnant and struggling with mental health issues. It turns out that Lyles was shot inside her apartment after she let the police inside. The first officer's reply is inaudible, but Lyles' sister told CNN affiliate KOMO that she told police Lyles had mental health issues when she was arrested earlier this month.

- Because of the previous incident, police considered her an "officer hazard", which is why two officers were dispatched to take her burglary report. "There's no way you could've taken a baton and knocked the knife out of her hand?"

The U.S. Department of Justice investigation placed the Seattle police under a federal consent decree in 2012 after finding that Seattle cops had a history of biased policing and excessive use of force, usually on people with substance abuse or mental problems.

Shortly after, the situation escalates and an officer is heard stating "We need help". "And you know, that's not acceptable", Solid Ground Communications Director Mike Buchman said.

Medics later arrived at the scene and declared Lyles dead at the scene.

The two officers had gone to Lyles' apartment after a call about a burglary. The rally for the teachers begins at 5 Magnuson Park, followed by a march to a press conference at 6 p.m., where the family of Charleena Lyles plans to speak. The apartments are a place where formerly homeless families go to get back on their feet.

On Monday, an audio recording by the officers' dashcam of the incident was released. Seattle police told the newspaper that the officers who shot her are white.

The shooting is under investigation, but family members are angry that police didn't use less deadly means to subdue Lyles, whom they described as "tiny", the Times reported.

Lyles was also reportedly pregnant at the time.
