'Transformers: The Last Knight' debuts to a franchise low

Michael Bay's Transformers: The Last Knight topped the box office this past weekend - both at home and overseas - but the fifth installment in the Paramount franchise is the first Transformers movie to miss reaching (or exceeding) the $100 million mark for its domestic debut.

"Transformers: The Last Knight" came out on top in a tepid weekend at the box office, recording the lowest opening in the decade-long history of the Paramount Pictures science-fiction franchise. The Chinese market will also be integral to the success of Transformers: The Last Knight, and we reported last week that it posted a huge Chinese opening day of $45.1 million.

Weekend estimates now show a tie for second place: "Cars 3" and "Wonder Woman" are both expected to earn $25.2 million. Almost a month after opening, Patty Jenkins' "Wonder Woman" continues to be a major draw. This weekend, it should earn an additional $25.2 million, bringing its domestic total to $318.4 million.

We're halfway through 2017 and of the 312 movies released theatrically in the United States (according to Box Office Mojo) so far this year, less than ten percent are certified blockbusters.

"Cars 3" is at $99.9 million.

The next highest-grossing movie made around half that, so you might be scratching your head when you read articles declaring that the latest entry in the Michael Bay-lead movie series is a financial disappointment. With another $7.4 million in the tank, the underwater shark thriller has a ten-day total of $24.2 million. The Dark Universe franchise starter is now sitting at just $68.5 million domestically but a much better $342.1 million overseas. Wonder Woman, in spot number three, brought in $25.1 million in its fourth week, dropping only 39%.

Coming in fifth was "The Mummy", starring Tom Cruise, which made $5.8 million.

Also playing very well in limited release - but not as well as "The Big Sick" - was Sofia Coppola's 'The Beguiled'.

The worldwide market on the other hand has been generous and kind to Transformers 5, with China being the most lucrative one. Comping to another recent franchise fifthquel, Last Knight came in 40% above Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, per Par. Upcoming markets for the film include France (June 28), Brazil (July 20), Mexico (July 21), Japan (August 4) and Spain (August 4). In four theaters, it earned a per-screen average of $60,136.

Scarlett Johansson's Rough Night was down 41% in its second weekend with $4.7 million. That movie earned $165.1 million from China alone, whereas the first two movies earned $103 million from China combined.

With $98.8 million in 10 days Cars 3 is $18.3 and $18.4 million behind Cars and Cars 2 at the same point in their respective box office runs. The Tupac Shakur biopic has whistled up $2.8 million.
