UK Parliament opening date set, suggesting Tory deal reached

Conservative former Prime Minister Sir John Major, who was crucial in bringing peace to Northern Ireland, has raised concerns about the impact of a Tory deal with the DUP.

DUP leader Arlene Foster arrived for talks with May. May's Conservatives in power.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May insists the Conservatives are "steadfastly" committed to the hard-won Northern Irish peace process, despite holding controversial talks with the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) to prop up her minority government.

"It's a unity of objective, having voted to leave the European Union, that their government gets on with that and makes a success of it".

The Irish republican Sinn Fein party which won seven seats in the election although MPs traditionally do not take up their seats in protest is also wary of the alliance.

The stakes for May are high as lawmakers return for their first day of business Tuesday.

The negotiations with the DUP revolve around support from the party on a vote-by-vote basis in parliament, rather than a formal coalition government.

A failure to gain support from the Northern Irish party would risk the Queen's Speech being voted down next week, and Jeremy Corbyn has said Labour will be pushing hard for that outcome.

The two parties might strike their own deal if Sinn Fein was offered a referendum on a united Ireland.

"Deal between DUP and government could be delayed until next week because of the aftermath of #grenfelltower and diary commitments of both leaders".

Sinn Fein's Stormont leader Michelle O'Neill, who will also take part in the meeting, said: "I will be making it very clear that any deal between the Tories and the DUP can not be allowed to undermine the Good Friday and subsequent agreements".

"I think it is very much doable to have a deal by the end of this month", she added.

At a press conference with May, Macron said the door was "always open" for Britain to remain in the European Union as long as the negotiations on Brexit have not finished.

The DUP is also far more socially conservative than the Conservatives.

"What we're doing in relation to the talks that we're holding ... with the Democratic Unionist Party, is ensuring that it is possible to ... give the stability to the UK Government that I think is necessary at this time", Ms May told a news conference in Paris following a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron.

The talks are aimed at restoring devolved government to Northern Ireland following the collapse of the Stormont Assembly which worked on the basis of shared power.

"We made the case to her that we would oppose any deal that undermined the Good Friday Agreement", he said. Foster. They have demanded she resign but she has denied any wrongdoing in the scandal.
