He brushed off an ABC/Washington Post poll over the weekend showing his approval rating down at 36 percent.

Only 36 percent of respondents to a Washington Post-ABC News poll approved of the job Trump is doing, while 58 percent disapproved. Only once in Gallup's trend, in January 2002 shortly after the 9/11 terror attacks, did well-above a majority say they agreed with the president on issues. The percentage of Americans who say they agree with Trump on the most important issues almost matches his approval rating.

Besides, it also showed that 48 percent of the respondents see the United States leadership in the world as weaker since Trump's inauguration, with only 27 percent believing it to be stronger.

Around two-thirds condemned his son's meeting with a Russian lawyer linked to the Kremlin.

Trump's standing, at this point in his presidency, is the opposite of Obama's and Bush's, who both enjoyed a 59 percent approval rating at this point in their administrations.

His tweets typically include tirades against the "fake news" media, exasperation with the "witch hunt" Russian Federation probe, personal attacks on perceived foes - alleging MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski was "bleeding badly from a face-lift", for example - and boasts of domestic and foreign policy accomplishments.

And in another recent poll that just looked at counties that voted for Trump, he sits at a 50 percent approval rating. Only one in three Americans believe Trump has the personality and leadership qualities a president should, including a non-trivial minority of Republicans.

The president dismissed his dismal approval rating in a tweet.

The poll also reveals Americans are not really believing that they'd be better off by the Republican plan to replace Obamacare. The remaining 30 per cent of Republicans say they prefer neither, something else or give no opinion.

Whatever Trump's struggles, the poll shows clear risks of Democrats' opposition to Trump.

Trump beat Hillary Clinton in these "surge" areas nationwide by a combined 65 percent-to-29 percent margin in 2016.

The Post-ABC poll was conducted July 10-13 among a random national sample of 1001 adults reached on mobile and landline phones.
