Other members of Diana's family in attendance included Prince Harry, Diana's brother, Earl Spencer, and her sisters Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Baroness Fellowes.

With the 20th anniversary of her death approaching, both William, 35, and Harry, 32, have spoken publicly about the impact that losing their mother has had on lives.

Her sons have already commissioned a statue of Diana which will stand in the public gardens of Kensington Palace - her former home. Harry recently spoke about a particular memory of her funeral that he feels strongly was wrong.

Six days after her death, she was buried on the island of the Oval Lake at Althorp House on the Spencers' family estate in Northamptonshire in England.

The family paid a private visit to Diana's final resting place at the Spencer family estate on Saturday, to attend a service conducted by Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, and re-dedicate Diana's grave 20 years after her death.

If#Princess Diana had not died nearly twenty years ago, she would have turned 56 years old on July 1.

William and Harry have been candid in recalling the emotional distress they had gone through after the tragic death. He related that as a 12-year-old boy he had to walk a long way behind his mother's coffin as he was watched by thousands of people and millions more on television. "I think an element of it is feeling like we let her down when we were younger. And I think it's important for people under 35 who probably won't remember her at all to remember that this was a special person and not just a lovely one". "We hope the statue will help all those who visit Kensington Palace to reflect on her life and her legacy".

According to an upcoming BBC documentary, now titled Diana, the princes plan to "stand up for her name" and fulfil what they consider their duty "as sons" to remind everyone "of the character and person that she was". The charity was established to promote the positive power of young people, something in which William and Harry's mother believed in strongly.
