Film Score Review - War For the Planet of the Apes

Taking the top-spot on the domestic charts this weekend was "War for the Planet of the Apes", which had a $56M opening weekend.

By Monday, it's expected to cross US$381 million domestically, which would put it past Harry Potter and The Deathly Hollows Part 2 to become the third highest Warner Bros. movie ever.

War for the Planet of the Apes is the No. 1 movie in North America this weekend after earning $56.5 million in receipts, BoxOfficeMojo.com announced Sunday.

"Productions like War for the Planet of the Apes not only make a big impact on the screen, they also support thousands of cast and crew members, local businesses and communities behind the scenes, from Vancouver to Ucluelet".

"War for the Planet of the Apes", the third movie in 20th Century Fox's reboot of "Planet of the Apes", won the weekend with an estimated $US56 million, according to Exhibitor Relations.

War for the Planet of the Apes is in theaters everywhere and stars Woody Harrelson, Steven Zahn, and Andy Serkis as Caesar. Rottentomatoes.com, which distills critics' reviews into a single score, gave the film a 94 percent positive rating. In third place was Despicable Me 3, far behind at $18.9 million. Not so fast. Even with the million-dollar cushion from Thursday, the opening Apes film fell way behind the second film for the combined Thursday/Friday, with Dawn earning $27.6 million, and War finding only $22 million. That's a 61 per cent drop from last weekend's heroic opening, which is probably a steeper falloff than Sony would have liked to see.

"The Big Sick" managed to remain in the top-five this weekend, the hit film brought in $7.6M across 2,597 locations.

The most recent predecessor, "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes", cost $170 million to produce and collected $710.6 million in worldwide box-office sales in 2014.

Cars 3 was down 41% to $3.2 in its fifth weekend. Kumail Nanjiani and Zoe Kazan headline the acclaimed feature, which was written by Nanjiani and produced by Judd Apatow. With an estimated $56.5M, Matt Reeves' latest knocked Homecoming out of the top spot at the box office, a position it maintained for only one week.

Week Two Last Week: No. 2 Friday: $13.6 million Weekend: $45.2 million Total: $208.3 million. It's right on the heels of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, trailing the Marvel tentpole by just $6 million.
