Iraqi prime minister declares victory over ISIS in Mosul

The fall of Mosul would be the biggest defeat yet for ISIL three years after it seized the city in a lightning offensive.

In February, Iraqi forces started a US-backed onslaught to wrest back the western section of Mosul from Islamic State, nearly a month after they recaptured the eastern part of the city.

The Iraqi prime minister arrived to "congratulate the armed forces and the Iraqi people" on the final defeat of IS in Mosul on Sunday, the statement said. Iraqi special forces are still fighting a few hundred meters (yards) away. Tens of thousands of army, police and counter-terrorism troops are thrown into the long-awaited offensive with air and ground support from a US-led coalition.

A smiling al-Abadi walked among the soldiers, at one point grabbing an Iraqi flag and briefly draping it across his shoulders.

The battle for Mosul has displaced close to a million people and killed thousands, with many living in camps outside the city.

The ISIS terror outfit had vowed to "fight to the death" in Mosul, however, Iraqi military spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Rasool stated that 30 militants had been killed when they were attempting to flee by swimming across the River Tigris that bisects the city.

"Some members of Daesh have surrendered", it added, using an Arab acronym of Islamic State.

Iraqi authorities will imminently announce a final victory, a United States general said on Saturday.

In mid-2014, ISIS overran the city, which now represents the embattled terrorist group's last stronghold in northern Iraq.

Iraqi security forces in the Bab al-Jadeed district of Mosul prepared to take full control of the city on Saturday after reporting the defensive lines of the group Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) are collapsing.

The second phase of the military operation was launched in February on the city's west side - divided in two by the Tigris River, the report said.

PM Abadi announced "the declaration of the end of the statelet of ISIS", following the liberation of the symbolic al-Nuri Mosque in Old Mosul on June 29.

The victory has come at a high cost with most of the city destroyed and lying in ruins.

Mar 14, 2017- Iraqi forces said they had captured the city's train station after reaching other symbolic sites such as the regional government headquarters and the city's museum.
