The outgoing Obama administration expelled 35 suspected Russian spies late previous year and seized two diplomatic compounds over what it said was the hacking of us political groups during the 2016 presidential election.

Among other things, they included shutting down two compounds, one in Maryland and one in NY, "used by Russian personnel for intelligence-related purposes", and declaring 35 Russian "intelligence operatives" persona non grata.

If the issue is not resolved, Zakharova said Russian Federation will be forced to take "reciprocal measures".

An administration official will be meeting next week with a Russian diplomat, and there are understandable fears that the Putin-friendly White House will return the compounds.

Peskov was responding to comments made to CNN by Sebastian Gorka, an adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump, that appeared to link the compounds' return to Russia's behavior in Syria.
