Ryan Lochte cleared of Rio Olympic incident charge

SAO PAULO-A Brazilian court has dismissed the criminal case against USA swimmer Ryan Lochte, who had been charged with filing a false robbery report during the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Lochte told NBC that he, Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger, and Jimmy Feigen had been stopped and robbed at gunpoint as the cab they were in pulled away from the service station. However, on Thursday, July 13th, Rio's Fifth Criminal Chamber of the Court of Justice closed a criminal case against Lochte by accepting a habeas corpus petition in his defense. "And I know that they love Jo, and she gave it her all today", Williams said.

The court decided that Lochte had not broken the law because Rio police instigated the investigation, not Lochte, according to USA Today Sports.

Prosecutors could still challenge the ruling, and they have 15 days to do so.

A Rio de Janeiro appeals court on Friday threw out that case after determining that Lochte's robbery claim, made in a TV interview, did not rise to the level of filing a false crime report. Days later, Rio authorities said during a press conference that the USA swimmers had vandalized the Shell gas station's restroom, citing surveillance video footage.

"We are pleased that the Court has finally dismissed the criminal prosecution against Mr. Lochte, while also acknowledging that he committed no crime while in Brazil".

Lochte subsequently said that he "definitely had too much to drink" that night, adding that he was still intoxicated when he provided false details to NBC's Billy Bush the day after the incident.

The same investigation found no evidence of damage other than a poster that Lochte tore from a wall.

Lochte was charged with false communication of a crime after he exaggerated his infamous August 15 story after a late-night party during the Games. Lochte was suspended for 10 months by the U.S. Olympic Committee, beginning in September 2016.

Lochte, 32, in June welcomed a baby boy with fiancé Kayla Rae Reid and said he is training for the 2020 Olympics.
