The powerful committee chairman says he is sending the President's eldest son the request in a letter.

Natalia Veselnitskaya has been in the headlines in recent days after the New York Times, calling her a "Kremlin-linked lawyer", reported on a meeting she had at Trump Tower in June with Trump Jr., then-campaign chair Paul Manafort, and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Trump Jr. said Tuesday he would be "happy" to work with a Senate Intelligence Committee now investigating alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election after he himself acknowledged meeting a Kremlin-linked lawyer during his father's campaign.

Democrat Adam Schiff, a computer intelligence expert, said his panel would like to see the use of Russian media trolls and whether they are related to short-term electoral campaigns.

"If he [Manafort] comes before our committee, and we'll subpoena him if necessary", Grassley said.

Trump Jr. said Monday, after the meeting was reported but before releasing the emails, that he is "Happy to work with" another Senate committee "to pass on what I know".

The exchange showed Trump Jr. conversing with a music publicist who wanted him to meet with a "Russian government attorney" who supposedly had dirt on Clinton as "part of Russia and its government's support for Mr. Trump".

Grassley lead the hearing as committee chairman, starting off with an opening statement that detailed job duties of the Federal Bureau of Investigation director and Wray's credentials.

"I think many people would have held that meeting", Trump told Reuters.

The "Steele dossier" is a report that is believed to have been funded by a Hillary Clinton backer and was spread widely among politicians and journalists with the intention of damaging Trump with information that has been widely debunked.

Trump also said in a tweet that his son was "open, transparent and innocent" and again dismissed the ongoing Russian Federation investigation as the "greatest Witch Hunt in political history".

Lawyers for President Donald Trump have raised the possibility that the request for the meeting could have been part of a smear campaign against him, trying to tie him and his campaign to Russian Federation.

"In retrospect, I probably would have done things a little differently", Trump Jr. said.
