The vessel is outfitted with touchscreen navigation display in place of a traditional throttle and is equipped with a reactor plant that can power the ship for up to 20 years without refueling. "We demand victory, and we will have total victory".

With praise and a blessing for the military, President Donald Trump helped hand over the USS Gerald R. Ford to the Navy on Saturday and said the state-of-the-art aircraft carrier will send a "100,000-ton message to the world" about America's military might when it is ultimately deployed.

"American steel and American hands have constructed this 100,000-ton message to the world", Trump said of the Ford during a speech that praised the bravery and spirit of US service members and referenced his desire for a buildup after years of spending restrictions.

The Ford was delivered to the Navy on June 1, after the ship completed its second set of sea trials, known as acceptance trials. Taken on her own, the Ford is the most expensive ship of any kind ever built, with a construction cost of almost $13 billion.

The new carrier is the lead ship of the Ford-class of "super -carriers", the first new class in more than 40 years, and will replace the current Nimitz-class carriers.

Many of these challenges stemmed from the multiple new technologies that the Navy incorporated into her design - including technologies that were not fully developed before they were installed.

The USS Gerald R. Ford will later be joined by the future USS John F. Kennedy, CVN 79, and the future USS Enterprise, CVN 80, as Ford-class vessels.

At the time, the Ford was already two years behind schedule and the memo's release came just days before the Navy announced the carrier would not be ready before November 2016 as was previously promised.

The USS Ford is the first member of the next generation of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers.

"The nation's going to be very proud of USS Gerald R. Ford", said Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson. The ship only requires a crew of 2,600 to operate, 600 less than the Nimitz. The work yet to be completed is expected to cost more than $775 million and take another four years.

"When it comes to battle, we don't want a fair fight", Mr. Trump said.
