Other prospective candidates too wilted under pressure, drawing censure from Goa RSS leader Subhash Velingkar, who accused the chief minister of using coercive tactics.

Delhi's ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) managed to retain the city's Bawana constituency, keeping its seat tally in the 70-member legislative assembly at 66.

The two seats that went to polls in Goa- Panaji and Valpoi -were won by the BJP.

However, Prakash quit the party and resigned from the Delhi Assembly to join the BJP in March, ahead of the municipal corporation elections. A surprise element was the Congress vote bank jumping from 7.8 per cent in 2015 to 24.21 per cent this time. The Congress is down from 17 seats to 16, but remains the single-largest party in the House.

The results of the assembly by-elections were announced August 28, with ruling parties winning in three states.

In interior Valpoi, Vishwajit Rane pulled off a convincing win, though there was anger among BJP workers at his crossover to the saffron party. The role fell upon All India Congress Committee secretary and party loyalist Girish Chodankar, who put up a formidable campaign despite the party's ground-level organsation staying away from the campaign after Monserrate joined the Goa Forward Party.

The bypoll in Panaji was necessitated by the resignation of sitting BJP MLA Sidarth Kuncolienkar to enable Parrikar contest the seat as required under law to become an MLA in six months of taking over as chief minister.

Kejriwal's AAP had won the Bawana general elections in 2015, bagging 1,09,259 votes.

The BJP's defeat in Bawana just four months after its massive victory in MCD elections and one-sided win in Rajouri Garden bypolls is nearly like a U-turn by voters in Delhi.

Sharmistha Mukherjee, the chief spokesperson of DPCC, said that the 31,919 votes polled by Congress candidate Surender Kumar in the bypoll was much more than double the votes of 14,846 that he had polled in the 2015 Assembly elections.

Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar was declared the victor from Panaji with a margin of 4,803 votes.

TDP candidate Brahmananda Reddy, who won the Nandhyal constituency, polled 97,076 votes beating his nearest rival YSR Congress party nominee Silpa Mohan Reddy, who netted 69,610 votes.
