De Grasse injures hamstring, out of worlds

Although lacking the showman's pizzaz of Bolt, who has accrued eight Olympic and 11 world gold medals, Van Niekerk has showed his worth on the track, shattering Michael Johnson's 17-year-old world record from lane eight when adding the Olympic 400m title to his world crown last year.

As always, journalists and TV crews, around 400 of them, from every corner of the world packed every available space and strained their arms in desperation to get their question answered by the great man, who playfully castigated one half of the auditorium for not giving him an enthusiastic enough welcome.

Though De Grasse has not run a legal sub-10 second time this season, he did run a strongly wind-assisted (+4.8 m/s) 9.69 in Stockholm back in June.

ANDRE DE GRASSE has withdrawn from the World Championships after tearing his hamstring in training.

"I deal with situations one step at a time, so I didn't really think that but it has been tough, a really up and down season". I'll be back stronger and faster than ever.

In a barb towards De Grasse earlier this week, Bolt - when asked about his likely successor - said: "I am not going down that road".

All signs pointed to a solid world championships for De Grasse.

"I know you really want me to say gold but that's what I want, I would love a medal and I think that would be a huge success, any colour".

So, with the Canadian who is considered the leader of the next wave of 100 meters men now not around to torment him, who is best equipped to ruin Bolt's farewell?

The sprint legend is set to bow out of track and field after the World Championships, which begin in London tomorrow.

"The entire year this 100m race in London was my focus", the Markham, Ont., native said in a statement confirming his withdrawal.

The Jamaican has struggled for form most of this season but in Monaco ran his fastest time of the year, 9.95.

He will of course start as the favourite in both the 100 m as well as the 200 m event.

The 30-year-old though needs to outperform the likes of Wayde Van Niekerk, Justin Gatlin and American sprint sensation Christian Coleman among others.

At the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, De Grasse won bronze in the 100 and - after pushing Bolt all the way in the semifinals - took silver in the 200.

"He was supposed to slow down", Bolt said after the race.

"I know from watching previous championships what the atmosphere is going to be like, from the fans to the Usain Bolt show, so to just be a part of history is a great feeling".
