The Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions today ordered the seizure of ex-premier Yingluck Shinawatra's bail bond after she did not show up for court appearance to hear her verdict on the rice pledging scheme scam. "If she is found she will be arrested", he said.

Thousands of supporters of former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra have gathered outside Thailand's Supreme Court despite calls by the military government and Yingluck herself for them to stay home because of security concerns. "I can't confirm if she's still in the country", Yingluck's lawyer Norawit Lalaeng told dpa.

In a Facebook post on Thursday Yingluck asked her followers to stay home to avoid any incidents stoked by people with "ill-intention against the country and us".

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said that the news of his predecessor's failing to appear in court surprised him and he had instructed police and other authorities to find her and bring her to justice. "If she's not here, what does that tell you?" However, her lawyer said he was not sure if she was still in the country. Yet, as Schaffar says, the case is an extension of the decade-long struggle between the movement founded by Yingluck's brother, Thaksin, which was embraced by Thailand's northern rural poor, and an elite comprising royalists, the military and their urban backers.

January 2015 - An army-backed legislature impeaches Ms Yingluck for corruption over her role in the rice scheme, which effectively bans her from politics.

Her campaigning strategy - dubbed fighting with smiles - and her propensity to shed tears in public forged an image far removed from that of the stern junta generals who ousted her from office in a 2014 coup.

If Yingluck has fled it would disappoint her supporters and make her opponents feel vindicated, said Thitinan Pongsudhirak, director of the Institute of Security and International Studies at Chulalongkorn University. The long-awaited decision on Yingluck's fate has rekindled tensions in the divided nation, but the military remains firmly in charge.

Seoul, Washington renegotiate FTA
President Donald Trump has said he would either renegotiate or terminate the deal, which he said has led to American job losses. In June, Mr Trump told South Korean President Moon Jae In that USA automakers should have a "fair shake" for better auto sales.

He declined to be named because he was not authorised to speak on behalf of Yingluck.

"Miss Yingluck confirms she will attend the verdict", Norrawit was quoted as saying.

Prawit Pongkunnut is a rice farmer from the northeastern city of Nakhon Ratchasima.

"The Thai prime minister has done her best, she has sacrificed a lot", said Seksan Chalitaporn, 64. The current regime has also accused Shinawatra of trying to buy votes by subsidizing farmers in the rural areas where her party dominates.

Instead, other rice-producing countries captured the market by selling at competitive prices. If convicted, Yingluck has the right to appeal.

Yingluck already has been held responsible for about $1 billion of the losses in an administrative ruling that froze her bank accounts.

The flight of a formerly powerful politician ahead of a court verdict is not a new phenomenon in Thailand. Yingluck said the rice subsidy scheme was "beneficial for the farmers and the country".
