GE's Immelt says he is no longer running for Uber CEO

Uber is without a CEO, chief operating officer, and chief financial officer, among other positions. The venture firm, which is a major investor in Uber, filed the suit earlier this month against former CEO Travis Kalanick in a push to remove him from the company entirely.

I have decided not to pursue a leadership position at Uber. Meg Whitman, CEO of Hewlett Packard Enterprise, was also a leading contender but said in late July that the Uber search process had become a "distraction" and that she would not be the next CEO. Immelt was among three finalists for the job at the ride-services company, according to sources close to the situation.

The board is holding daily meetings to interview remaining candidates and could cast a final vote as soon as Sunday afternoon in San Francisco, according to people familiar with the deliberations. Whichever candidate the board chooses will be the person to usher the company into the post-Travis Kalanick era.

Uber has been searching for an experienced executive to fill the vacuum left at the top by the departure of co-founder Kalanick in June, and to restore confidence in the business following months of chaos. That committee is trying to change the company's culture so it's better behaved, a hard task without a top leader.

Along with some investors questioning Immelt's previous tenure at GE, turmoil on Uber's board reportedly played a major role in Immelt's decision to remove himself from the search.

She is now president and chief executive of Hewlett Packard Enterprise Company, having split its computer and printer business (HP Inc) from its corporate hardware and services operations in 2014. She has maintained publicly that she will not take the job even as the board still considers her a viable option.

Ms Whitman has previously said she is not interested in the job, posting on Twitter that "I am not going anywhere".

Immelt, who will remain GE's chairman until December 31, stepped down as CEO at the end of July.

More significantly, Immelt may not have been the only candidate Uber was seriously considering for CEO.

The next chief will have plenty to do.
