Gorakhpur Mishap! Who is responsible? Hospital or Suppliers?

Two ministers from the Adityanth government - Siddharth Nath Singh (Health) and Ashutosh Tandon (Medical Education) reached the medical college today to take stock of the situation.

Gorakhpur District Magistrate Rajeev Rautela said on Friday: "No death in BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur, has taken place due to shortage of oxygen supply". No reason has been given for these deaths but the Union Home Ministry said that according to the SP of Gorakhpur, 21 children died due to lack of supply of liquid oxygen. "The district magistrate is camping there to look into the matter".

India's main opposition Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi and party Vice President Rahul Gandhi have expressed deep shock over the deaths.

Before leaving for Gorakhpur, Health Minister Singh said, "The chief minister was not informed by the doctors and officials about shortage of oxygen on August 9".

11 women died and more than 20 were admitted in the hospital when a government-run mass sterilisation campaign went horribly wrong in Chhattisgarh in November 2014.

Multiple local media reports said numerous children died after the company which was supplying liquid oxygen stopped the service, apparently over non-payment of dues.

The region is also one of India's poorest and registers hundreds of child deaths each year from Japanese Encephalitis and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome, which is rife in parts of eastern and northern India.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday dispatched two Cabinet Ministers to the hospital.

Reports also say that supply was stopped by Pushpa Sales, the firm responsible for supplying oxygen after the hospital failed to clear dues of Rs 68 lakhs. According to reports, 12 children were suffering from encephalitis. They will visit the hospital after their meeting. Another Samajwadi Party leader, Ram Gopal Yadav, demanded compensation for the families of the children who died.

After digging deeper, it turns out that a total number of 60 deaths have occurred in the past 5 days.

"I did so completely on humanitarian grounds", he said, and denied reports that he had disrupted the oxygen supply over non-payment of dues. Mr Mishra later said he had already given his resignation, owing moral responsibility for the tragedy. "Heart-wrenching incident. Saddened by children's death".

But a letter from the staff of the Central Oxygen Pipeline Plant at the hospital - from where oxygen is piped to different wards - contradicts these claim.
