Italian tennis star blames mum for doping ban

Sara Errani is a previous Grand Slam finalist, reaching the final of the French Open in 2012, and claims that the drug must have contaminated her food without her knowledge.

The drug is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency as it can be used by bodybuilders to increase lean body mass.

Errani will be ineligible until midnight on October 2nd and her results between February 16th and June 7th will be disqualified resulting in the forfeiture of ranking points and prize money in that period.

Not only could they be using Sara Errani as a scapegoat, but they also banned her for two months, an amount of time that shows that they are taking action, but is also not long enough to really hurt the player.

She promptly admitted that she had committed the Anti-Doping Rule Violation charged, and asked for a hearing before an Independent Tribunal in accordance with Article 8 of the Program to determine the consequences to be imposed on her for that violation.

"However, this substance (letrozole) is present in Femara, a medicine my mother has been using daily since 2012 for therapeutic goal, further to a surgery for breast cancer, and therefore is present in the house where I am now living".

Her two month ban has been back-dated to begin on August 3.

Errani reached the singles final at the French Open in 2012, losing to Russian Maria Sharapova 6-3, 6-2.

"Ms. Errani, a 29-year-old player from Italy, provided a urine sample on 16 February 2017 as part of an Out-of-Competition test under the Programme", said the ITF in a statement.

Errani based her case for mitigation on the fact she had been visiting her parents shortly before her positive test. This would prove that she did not even take an entire pill's amount of the banned substance.

"She [Fulvia] explained how in the past she had accidentally dropped pills from the blister pack from which Femara (letrozole) was discharged by hand on to the worktop or on to the floor", the tribunal's decision read.

"The only viable option has been that an accidental food contamination occurred at some stage in the house."
