One Dead, Suspect Wounded in Charleston, SC Restaurant Shooting

Police are negotiating with "a disgruntled employee" of the restaurant, Mayor John Tecklenburg told reporters on Thursday.

One person was shot and killed before the shooter took at least one hostage upstairs after the majority of the occupants left the restaurant.

An area of downtown Charleston, South Carolina, has been shut down after police received a report of an active shooter.

Officers were able to get the injured man out of the restaurant, but Tecklenburg said the restaurant employee has died.

Authorities confirmed that the fired dishwasher killed the restaurant's executive chef, 37-year-old Anthony Shane Whiddon.

Patrons inside the restaurant said they realized something was going on when they saw the staff run to the front of the restaurant.

"I heard that a dishwasher got fired and came back in and shot the chef", said a local man, John Aquino. They initially said they believed there were "a couple" or a "small number" of hostages. Initially the situation was reportedly speculated as "a hostage situation involving a weapon". Dylann Roof was sentenced to death in the case.
