Russian ambassador is 4th to die since January

Russia's ambassador to Sudan, Mirgayas Shirinsky, was found dead at his residence in Khartoum on Wednesday night, officials said.

The Sudanese foreign ministry first broke the news and it was later confirmed by the Russian foreign ministry on Wednesday evening.

He has become the fourth Russian ambassador to die within the year. Initial reports ruled out any "foul play" in the death of the ambassador, the foreign ministries added.

The New York City medical examiner's office declined to release autopsy results, citing diplomatic immunity, but The Associated Press quoted senior officials speaking on condition of anonymity as saying the examiner found that Churkin died of a heart attack.

"He was found dead in the swimming pool of his residence at 7:05 p.m.", Omar al-Mokhtar, a police spokesman, told AFP.

Shirinsky, who was believed to be in his early 60s, was appointed ambassador to Sudan in 2013.

Shirinsky had been in the Russian diplomatic service since 1977 and had previously served in Yemen, Saudi Arabia and Rwanda.
