In a separate deal, another high draft choice, the 2015 second-round pick, Ronald Darby, was sent to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for wide receiver Jordan Matthews and Philadelphia's third-round pick in 2018.

Watkins (6-1, 211) was once considered the prized receiver of the 2014 National Football League draft, which turned out to be loaded at the position. He finishes his career in Buffalo with 153 catches for 2,459 yards and 17 touchdowns.

Watkins' future in Buffalo was already in question after the Bills in May declined to pick up his fifth-year option.

The 24-year-old is scheduled for free agency in the spring, meaning the Rams are taking a considerable gamble in sending Gaines and a second-round pick to Buffalo for potentially one year of Watkins if he leaves. Last season he had 28 receptions for 430 yards and two scores in eight games for the Bills.

Watkins had been the Bills starter since Buffalo traded up five spots in the 2014 draft to select him with the No. 4 pick.

Among current Rams receivers, Robert Woods was the most productive guy last season and he only had 613 yards on 51 catches.

The Rams must think that Watkins is as healthy as he's been in his entire career. Last season Watkins missed half of the season due to injury which limited his production.

Darby started 29 games in his first two seasons in Buffalo.

While Matthews won't necessarily replace Watkins in terms of role, he'll replace him in terms of production.

The Rams clearly focused on upgrading their passing game this offseason as they hope to turn Jared Goff, the 2016 NFL Draft's No. 1 overall pick, into a franchise quarterback.
