Carnival Valor and Carnival Freedom are now keeping a safe distance from the storm as they make their way back to Galveston. The ship plans to leave Cozumel on Friday night and start its journey back to Galveston. The Port of Galveston was closed Friday amid the hurricane threat.

The ships packing almost 12,000 guests and roughly 3,700 crew members combined may be delaying returns to the Port of Galveston, a Gulf Coast stop near Houston. The cruise line is "still actively monitoring path and progression" of the hurricane, a spokesperson said in an email. Both ships will make a brief stop in New Orleans on Saturday to replenish fuel, fresh water and food supplies.

Carnival Breeze was supposed to return to Galveston on Sunday.

Port and cruise officials said they would get the ships into port as soon as weather allowed, which could be sooner than Tuesday.

Hurricane Harvey, now a Category 2 storm, is on track to strengthen to a Category 3 sometime Friday. "However, we will return to Galveston only when it is safe to do". Guests who sail on the modified voyages will receive a pro-rated refund equal to the number of cruise days missed.
