The ministry also announced that Qatar's Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani held a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif.

The two stressed the need for closer bilateral relations and exchanged views on regional and worldwide developments, the Qatari ministry said.

Attempts by Kuwait, the US and others have failed to make headway.
