Uber Hires Former Expedia CEO

He described his relationship with Kalanick, who was forced to resign from the Uber CEO role in June amid a wave of scandals at the company, as "budding" and said there was "mutual respect".

"As you probably know by now, Dara Khosrowshahi has been asked to lead Uber", read a copy of a memo from Expedia board chairman Barry Diller to Expedia employees included in an SEC filing.

If and when the appointment of Uber's next CEO is formerly announced by the company, Khosrowshahi has a hefty job on his hands to turn the company around and rebuild the reputation Uber had established when it was first founded in 2009.

Kalanick was forced to resign nine weeks ago, after a board-sponsored investigation by former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder found that Kalanick failed to intervene regarding rumors of sexual harassment by senior management, and that the company failed to sufficiently meet racial and gender diversity goals.

Meanwhile, Uber's chief security officer, Joe Sullivan, told Reuters that the privacy tracking changes are unrelated to the new chief executive shakeup.

"Khosrowshahi leaving is a major loss for Expedia, which will likely sell off as a result", Cowen & Co analyst Kevin Kopelman wrote in a note. He told Bloomberg's How Did I Get Here, "Our family escaped Iran on the eve of the Iranian Revolution in 1978, when I was 9". While the driver was convicted of the assault in India in 2015, that lawsuit was filed after Kalanick and two other Uber executives privately floated an outlandish conspiracy theory that the woman had never been raped and that Uber had been framed by its competitor Ola.

Prior to joining IAC, Khosrowshahi worked at Allen & Company LLC from 1991 to 1998, where he served as VP from 1995 to 1998.

Khosrowshahi was part of IAC's acquisition of Expedia in August 2005.

Khosrowshahi has been praised in his role as the CEO of Expedia, but at Uber, he'll have a list of daunting tasks to tackle right from the start.

His pay has fluctuated wildly because of stock options.

Politically, Khosrowshahi has been an active and vocal opposition for President Donald Trump's policies, especially the travel ban placed on Muslim-majority countries. TIME also wrote that he was the highest paid CEO of a USA tech company in 2016 "having enjoyed a 88.1 pay rise".

"Dara is not the type to seek headlines", says Hadi Partovi, a cousin of Khosrowshahi and an early Uber investor.
