Five people died in a Florida nursing home that lost power following Hurricane Irma, Broward County mayor Barbara Sharief said on Wednesday.

According to Hollywood Fire Rescue and Police, 120 people were evacuated at The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills, located at 1200 N 35 Ave., due to intense heat and no power.

Police are launching a criminal investigation after 6 residents of a Florida nursing home died.

Officials said responders "found several patients in varying degrees of medical distress". Three people were found deceased at the site and three more died later, the police said.

Officials across Florida are warning people to keep generators outside their homes.

The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills in Hollywood, Fla., was evacuated on September 13, 2017.

"They identified which facilities were to be critical top infrastructure facilities, this was not one of them", he said about the Hollywood Hills center.

The 152-bed rehabilitation center was fined $5,500 on February 18, 2016, according to a Medicare website. The records show that a year ago, the home had only a temporary generator, and was unable to produce documentation confirming its plans to replace it with a permanent one. "I have nothing", said Mercedes Lopez, 50, whose family fled north from the Keys town of Marathon on Friday and rode out the storm at an Orlando hotel, only to learn their home was destroyed, along with the gasoline station where Lopez worked.

Power outages reported across South Florida as Irma approaches
About 574,000 of those outages were in Miami-Dade County, while there were 360,000 in Broward and almost 136,000 in Palm Beach County.

The Florida Health Care Association, a long-term care industry group, released a statement Wednesday morning framing the deaths within the context of Irma's brutal blow to the state.

At a news conference, Florida Power and Light said it serviced portions of the facility.

Irma's economic toll on Florida already includes almost $250 million in preparation and recovery expenses by 31 state agencies. As a precaution, Hollywood police officers were checking on the 42 other assisted-living facilities and nursing homes in the area.

"There's nothing we can do", he said.

"What we've seen is something extremely tragic that points to the need to having plans in advance when it comes to emergency preparation".

In recent years the facility has been cited twice for violations related to federal requirements about its backup power capabilities. The company met with officials in Broward County in early March, he said. Utility officials warned it could take 10 days or more for power to be fully restored.

While a nursing home has been at that location almost 50 years, the Rehabilitation Center's name and registration are only two years old.
