Death toll in Mexico's biggest quake continues to rise

A total of 61 people have been reported as the new death toll figure after an 8.2 quake hit Mexico's Pacific Thursday night.

In Tabasco, two children were among the dead.

"It was a major quake in scale and magnitude, the strongest in the past 100 years", said President Enrique Pena Nieto in an address from the National Disaster Prevention Center's headquarters, where he was supervising the emergency response.

About half of the city hall collapsed in a pile of rubble, and streets were littered with the debris of ruined houses.

The quake, one of the biggest in Mexico's history, was felt hundreds of miles away, in Mexico City, where people fled violently swaying buildings.

The sharp increase came as civil defence authorities in the state of Oaxaca said that 71 deaths had been confirmed in that state alone.

A monster 8.2 magnitude natural disaster brought an unusual phenomenon that lit up the sky as it hit Mexico's coast, killing at least 60 people.

Mexico's seismology service estimated it at 8.2 magnitude while the US Geological Survey put it at 8.1 - the same as in 1985, the quake-prone country's most destructive ever.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported waves of 3.3 feet (1 meter) above the tide level off Salina Cruz, Mexico.

President Enrique Pena Nieto who was closely overlooking the rescue operations said that the authorities are making attempts to re-establish supplies of water and food and provide medical attention to those who need it.

The epicentre was in a seismic hotspot in the Pacific where one tectonic plate dives under another.

Four people were also injured in neighboring Guatemala, where President Jimmy Morales flew over affected areas and ordered urgent humanitarian assistance.

The quake had a depth of 20 miles, according to CNN.

The quake also triggered a tsunami warning and the evacuation of thousands of people in coastal communities in Chiapas; however, the warning was later lifted. The 8.1 quake off the southern Pacific coast just before midnight Thursday toppled hundreds of buildings in several states.
